Officers from the National Police have detained a Ukrainian national boy, who has just turned 18, in connection with the death of David, a 40-year-old resident of the Murcian village of Zarandona. The arrest took place during the morning of Wednesday. The detainee is being held at Ceballos Police Station and must appear before the Murcia on-duty court no later than Saturday.

The victim died at a hospital several hours after being found in a green area of the municipality in a semiconscious state and with bleeding wounds. The Homicide Unit is maintaining an active investigation and does not rule out that further arrests may take place.

According to La Opinión de Murcia, the authorities are treating the incident as a homicide, not as murder. The legal distinction between the two figures lies in the absence of treachery or cruelty. People close to the investigation indicated that, in altercations of this nature, the starting point is that there was no initial purpose to cause death.

The boy is attributed with the offence of negligent homicide. From the earliest hours of the investigation, officers were working on the hypothesis that the person responsible could be someone of young age.

The village of Zarandona has gone through days of shock. On Tuesday, numerous residents gathered to bid farewell to David, affectionately nicknamed the 'Duke', at a religious ceremony followed by a tribute with candles and wreaths of flowers. The police forces have requested that the population avoid spreading speculation and place their trust in the work of the investigators.
