Three detained in A Pobra do Caramiñal with more than one tonne of cocaine
National Police arrested the leader of the Os Fanchos clan and two other men on 22 August in the A Coruña municipality of A Pobra do Caramiñal as they were transporting 1,410 kilos of cocaine from a shed to a nearby residence, according to heraldo.es.
In searches following the arrest, officers also seized 100 grammes of heroin, cash and other items of interest to the investigation.
Investigation began with arrival of two vessels
The operation was launched on Thursday 20 August when investigators learned that two vessels had brought a significant shipment of cocaine ashore at a beach in A Pobra do Caramiñal. The investigation received collaboration from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Officers identified the Os Fanchos clan as the group responsible for unloading and guarding the drugs, and focused surveillance on its leader, identified as one of the coordinators of the shipment.
Investigators observed nocturnal movements
At approximately 06:55 on Friday 22 August, investigators observed a vehicle arriving at the main suspect's home. Minutes later, a person exited the residence carrying a rucksack and got into the vehicle.
During that same early morning, the clan leader and his two companions made several trips between his home and a shed located opposite the property, very close to O Conchido beach. The three men began moving large packages from the shed to the residence, which led officers to suspect they were packages of cocaine based on their characteristics and the manner in which they were being handled.
At that point, National Police proceeded to arrest the three individuals involved.
Those detained to appear before court on Monday
The three arrested men, including the leader of the Os Fanchos clan, will appear on Monday before the Court of First Instance in Ribeira, acting as duty court.
