The father of Ander, a 30-year-old from Santurtzi who suffered from a mental illness, has stated off camera to tele7.tv that his son trusted the municipal police and would go to the station seeking help during his psychotic episodes.
According to Fernando, the deceased's father, this was also what happened on Monday afternoon. The police report records that Ander snatched a walking stick from an elderly man, at which point the police intervention began. The operation concluded on Cervantes Street, following a pursuit, with the use of a taser gun.
The police called the father to inform him that his son had been detained following an altercation and taken to Cruces hospital. However, once in the emergency department, the duty doctor informed him that, according to the information provided to her, Ander had been found unconscious in the street.
Faced with a lack of clear and coherent explanations, the family has decided to take the case to court.
Fernando does not rule out that a heat stroke may have caused a state of mental confusion in his son, who at that moment was fishing on the Portugalete dock. There he left his fishing rod and rucksack abandoned, which were recovered by the municipal police.
A friend of the young man also spoke to tele7.tv. He described Ander as "a good lad": he was stocky and athletic, and stated that he did not deserve what had happened to him, in words laden with anger and sadness.
The deceased's friends have asked the media to report the facts with rigour and not limit themselves to reporting solely on the three officers who, according to the ESAN union, were injured during the operation.
The investigation must determine the exact circumstances of Ander's death.
