27-year-old woman stabbed to death in Santander; partner arrested in suspected gender-based killing

A 27-year-old woman died on Friday in Santander after suffering multiple stab wounds inside a residence located on a central street in the city, according to tribunaavila.com. The National Police detained her partner, a 39-year-old man, as the suspected person responsible for the crime, which is being investigated as a possible case of gender-based violence.
Officers attended the property at approximately 12:30 following notification of the incident. Upon arrival, they found the victim with bleeding wounds consistent with a bladed weapon. The injuries were extremely serious and the woman did not survive.
The man was arrested at the same property. According to the Government Delegation in Cantabria, the detainee allegedly admitted to being the perpetrator of the homicide. He was subsequently taken to the National Police Station in Santander, where he remains whilst the investigation continues.
Following the incident, the protocol established for such cases was activated. Specialist officers assumed responsibility for the proceedings to clarify the circumstances of the crime and determine whether it constitutes a formal murder case of gender-based violence.
Initial checks reveal that there were no previous reports of gender-based violence between the victim and the detainee. The Government Delegation has forwarded all available information to the Ministry of Equality, the body responsible for officially confirming the nature of the case.
Should the gender-based character of the crime be confirmed, it would be the 33rd murder through gender-based violence recorded in Spain so far in 2026, bringing the total number of women murdered to 1,374 since official records began in 2003.
