The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested a 47-year-old drug trafficker on 27 May in Girona who had escaped from prison while on a penitentiary leave, according to lasexta.com. The man left the penitentiary to enjoy his leave in March and did not return. He was placed on a wanted list as the perpetrator of a sentence breach offence.
The fugitive was part of a criminal organisation that transported large quantities of hashish from Morocco to the Spanish coast. The organisation used high-powered vessels to make landings at various points along the Mediterranean coastline. From there, the drugs were collected and distributed in vans to different parts of Spain.
Because of his involvement in these activities, the man was serving a nine-year prison sentence for offences against public health, drug trafficking and membership of a criminal group, and he also had numerous previous convictions.
After his escape, the detainee took refuge for several months in his mother's home in Santa Cristina d'Aro (Girona). When he needed money, he began working irregularly for a construction contractor who did not ask for documentation and paid him in cash without declaring it.
A police investigation led to the deployment of an extensive operation that culminated in his capture on 27 May in Girona, when he was attempting to flee to France in his mother's vehicle. After being brought before the courts, the detainee was returned to Puig de les Basses Penitentiary in Figueres (Girona) to continue serving his sentence.
