Couple arrested in Tenerife for confining elderly man and emptying his bank account
A woman who worked as a healthcare assistant and a man have been arrested in Tenerife after being accused of keeping an elderly man locked in his own house for a week. The objective was to seize the money he held in the bank. The amount stolen exceeds €4,000.
The case came to light when an individual presented himself at the Guardia Civil barracks in Granadilla to lodge a complaint for fraud against two people, according to the newspaper ABC.
The victim had been admitted to a hospital for several days. Taking advantage of his weakened condition and the fact that he had no family in the area, the healthcare assistant managed to build a relationship of trust with him.
When the patient was discharged, the woman and her companion took him to her residence. There they deprived him of his liberty and prevented any contact with the outside world for at least seven days. During that period, they accessed his funds through cash withdrawals at ATMs and transfers.
Both arrested individuals were brought before a judge. The investigators are keeping the case open and do not rule out that there may be other elderly people who have fallen into the same trap.
