Officer dragged by fleeing vehicle
A Marbella Local Police officer was admitted to Costa del Sol Hospital after clinging to a moving vehicle in an attempt to recover a stolen handbag. According to The Olive Press, the incident occurred shortly before 20:00 on Wednesday when the off-duty officer was shopping at a supermarket in Estepona with her partner.
The officer spotted two men stealing a handbag from a woman in the car park. One of the suspects distracted the victim whilst the other took the wallet. The police officer, alerted by the suspicious behaviour, ordered the thieves to stop.
The pursuit
Ignoring the order, the two men ran towards their hire vehicle with the stolen items. The officer pursued them and clung to the passenger-side window to prevent their escape. The driver accelerated sharply, dragging the police officer several metres along the road whilst the passenger repeatedly struck his hands to force him to let go.
The officer eventually fell from the moving vehicle, suffering a blow to the head. He was taken to Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, where he remained under observation. According to local reports, he was not in danger of his life, though he was treated for dizziness caused by the head trauma.
Investigation ongoing
The two suspects escaped in the hire vehicle and had not been arrested at the time of reporting. The injured officer is an active member of Marbella Local Police, although he was off duty when he intervened. Doctors ruled out that his life was in danger.
