Prisoner at Mas d'Enric sentenced to two years for bringing drugs in with family help

An inmate at the Centre Penitenciari de Mas d'Enric, in El Catllar, has been sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 191 euros for an offence against public health, according to diaridetarragona.com. The Provincial Court of Tarragona handed down the sentence as part of a plea agreement that suspends the prison sentence for three years, provided the condemned man does not reoffend.
The accused is an Algerian citizen with authorisation to reside in Spain. He had been held in provisional detention since 2 January 2018 by order of the Court of First Instance and Investigation number 2 in Amposta.
On 3 June, after spending almost five months in preventive custody, he had a face-to-face visit with several relatives. At the end of the visit, prison officers found him in possession of seven packages containing a gross weight of 36.85 grammes of three different illegal substances: 28.28 grammes of hashish, valued at €155.25; 0.78 grammes of cocaine, valued at €27.88; and 1.57 grammes of marijuana, valued at €7.97. The total value of the haul came to €191.10.
According to the judgment, the inmate intended to distribute the substances for trafficking to third parties within the prison facility.
The case contrasts with a recent ruling by the same court. A few weeks ago, the Provincial Court of Tarragona acquitted another inmate at the same facility who was found with two packages containing 12.5 grammes of heroin — net weight of 9.63 grammes with a purity of 30 per cent and a street value of 541 euros — following a meeting with his mother. The judges considered there was insufficient evidence that the drug was intended for sale.
