Drug trafficking network dismantled in Camargo
Customs Surveillance of the Tax Agency and the National Police in Cantabria have dismantled a network dedicated to drug trafficking, unlawful possession of weapons and money laundering. According to El Confidencial, the operation, carried out on 21 October in Camargo, resulted in seven arrests, including that of a lawyer from the region.
The investigation began in May 2026 when specialised officers detected signs of a resident of the municipality operating in drug trafficking, making sales to both consumers and other distributors. Investigators established that the suspect conducted his transactions in the vicinity of his home and adopted security measures to evade police action.
Expansion of enquiries due to economic irregularities
During the proceedings, officers noted that the lifestyle of the person under investigation did not match his declared work activity. This discrepancy prompted an expansion of the investigation together with Customs Surveillance to clarify a possible money laundering offence.
The enquiries revealed the participation of the main suspect's wife in the distribution of narcotics and money laundering. Similarly, another individual was identified as being "at the same level" in decision-making regarding distribution, and two other men were identified as collaborators "at a lower level".
Lawyer in the money laundering operation
The most significant role fell to a lawyer from Cantabria who, "actively", participated in creating a network of companies and foundations designed to introduce ten million euros from abroad, concealing its illicit origin.
Items seized
The joint operation deployed on 21 October included searches of the homes of those under investigation and a family industrial unit in Camargo. The intervention resulted in the seizure of one kilogramme of cocaine, 322 grammes of hashish, 963 grammes of marijuana and 12,850 euros in cash.
With regard to weapons, officers located a 12-calibre shotgun—stolen in Guipúzcoa in 2022 and with unlawful modifications—, two air rifles, two air pistols, a blank-firing pistol and several bladed weapons: three katanas, a machete and two flick knives. Cryptocurrency mining equipment and material associated with trafficking were also seized.
Arrangements for those arrested
After questioning at police headquarters, the main suspect's wife, the lawyer from Cantabria and two other arrested individuals were released. The main suspect was brought before the courts and a remand in custody was ordered. The woman and the lawyer face charges of money laundering; the main suspect faces charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and unlawful possession of weapons; and the remaining detainees face charges of drug trafficking.
