The public prosecutor's office before the Provincial Court of Pontevedra has decided to increase its sentencing demand to 17 years imprisonment in proceedings against an individual for an alleged crime of attempted homicide. According to the prosecution's account, the defendant travelled to his former partner's home—situated in a precarious settlement in the city—carrying a pry bar tool and a homemade spear, according to La Voz de Galicia.
The incident reportedly occurred in the afternoon of 15 June 2025. The victim and the aggressor had been in a romantic relationship that had lasted for nearly four decades. The prosecution's brief contends that the defendant dealt multiple blows targeting particularly vulnerable areas of the body, including the abdomen and skull, causing the woman to collapse on the ground and lose consciousness, with no capacity to defend herself from the assault.
The public prosecutor's office is requesting that the defendant be sentenced with the aggravating factor of recidivism, given that he has already served two previous sentences for homicide offences. It is also seeking consideration of the aggravating factors of kinship and gender. Along with the main sentence, it is demanding a nine-year restraining order prohibiting approach to the victim, as well as compensation of €3,891 for the injuries suffered and a further €4,000 for moral damage.
The private party, represented by the victim herself, is seeking a 15-year prison sentence and overall compensation of €24,000.
At the hearing held before the fourth section of the provincial court, the defendant offered a completely opposite version. He denied any physical contact with the woman and alleged that she had inflicted the wounds on herself with the intention of blaming him. He repeated on several occasions: "I did not touch her." Notably, the same defendant did admit during the trial his responsibility in the two previous crimes that had led to his imprisonment, but entirely disassociated himself from the facts now being tried.
The court will rule in the coming days, evaluating the strength of the evidence presented and the reliability of the testimony heard during the oral trial.
