Shooting in Barcelona: One dead outside police station
A man died this morning from a gunshot wound to the head in central Barcelona, near an office issuing passports and identity documents for the National Police.
The incident occurred around 10:00 local time (11:00 Greek time) on Carrer de Balmes street. The gunman fled immediately from the scene and remains at large.
The investigation is being handled by the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's autonomous police force, and specifically by the Criminal Investigations Division. The authorities have footage of the suspect captured by security cameras. The murder weapon was also found at the crime scene. A search operation has been launched to locate and arrest the fugitive.
Barcelona is on heightened alert due to an upcoming visit by Pope Leo XIV.
Just three days earlier, on the previous Sunday, another fatal shooting had occurred in the Zona Franca area of the city. According to news outlet ara.cat, authorities are examining the possibility that this second incident is linked to a drug trafficking-related settlement of accounts.
