Three people have died and a fourth was left in serious condition after consuming narcotics in two small towns in the province of León, according to reports. Alarms were raised on Sunday morning when the bodies of two men, aged 57 and 59, were found in the street outside the house where one of them lived in Veguellina de Órbigo. Both were regular drug users, according to indications.
The Guardia Civil ruled out from the outset that these were deaths from violence, pointing to overdose as the most probable cause. A few hours later, the death of a woman was reported, apparently for the same reason, in Villarejo de Órbigo, a municipality located just over two kilometres from Veguellina and belonging to the same council.
On Monday, a Guardia Civil patrol travelled to the Montaña Central after receiving notice that a young woman, resident of a town near Villamanín, was showing symptoms similar to those of the previous victims. The young woman was transported by ambulance to León Hospital in very serious condition, although health services managed to stabilise her. She acknowledged being a regular consumer of narcotics.
The temporal coincidence of the three deaths and the short distance between the towns led authorities to consider the hypothesis of an adulterated batch of drugs. Following the social alarm generated, the Government Sub-delegation made public on Monday the results of the autopsies carried out on the two men found in Veguellina de Órbigo.
Forensic reports confirmed that no signs of criminality were observed and that the deaths were natural in character and related to drug consumption. Similarly, any link was ruled out between those deaths and the death of the woman in Villarejo de Órbigo, as well as with the case of the young woman from the Villamanín region.
Sources cited by Efe indicate that neither the Guardia Civil nor the National Police are conducting any investigation into a possible adulterated batch of drugs, a hypothesis thus ruled out by authorities.
