A sub-inspector who served in the Granada municipal police force has been held in a provincial prison to serve the sentence imposed for mistreating his former romantic partner. The decision to execute the custodial sentence came following a report from the public prosecutor's office which was opposed to granting him any benefit that would avoid imprisonment.
The trial court initially imposed a sentence of approximately three years' imprisonment—which the provincial court later reduced slightly—for a pattern of abusive conduct maintained during their cohabitation. The judgement also disqualifies him from carrying weapons for a three-year period and prohibits him from approaching or communicating with the victim and one of her two daughters.
The proven narrative establishes that from 2017 onwards, when the woman began preparing for competitive examinations and later pursuing a doctorate, the relationship deteriorated gravely. The defendant developed a pattern of domination, surveillance and constant contempt. According to the judge, he repeatedly used degrading expressions—insults relating to her body, her sexual conduct and her professional worth—with the purpose of degrading her. Additionally, he made threats to kill her and displayed outbursts of fury destroying household items, all as a mechanism of psychological subjugation.
In parallel, this same official is under investigation in another case for alleged illegalities committed in competitive selection processes within the police force. Despite having both proceedings open, the corporation governing the city—under mayor Marifrán Carazo—appointed him as head of police academy training. In response to criticism, the town council initially defended the legality of the position, but ultimately revoked the appointment.
