A fourteen-year-old boy has been referred to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office after striking a local police officer with his moped in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the centre of the town.
The incident began when a patrol unit observed a motorbike with two youths aboard travelling the wrong way down Molinillo street. After ordering the vehicle to stop, it came to a momentary halt. At the moment when the officer approached on foot to request documentation, the young driver pressed the accelerator hard and struck the uniformed officer.
The official fell injured and was evacuated to Virgen del Camino Hospital. The passenger, aged thirteen, also fell to the ground after losing his balance. The driver managed to flee, although the number plate became detached from the moped, which allowed him to be located quickly. He later turned himself in at the police station with a relative.
The moped was seized for lacking insurance and failing to pass the mandatory technical inspection. Union representatives have denounced that the local force suffers from a critical shortage of staff: sixteen posts remain unfilled and, in some shifts, only one patrol watches over seventy thousand residents. They have demanded that the municipal mayor assume the political consequences of this situation.
