A minor detained following the death of a neighbour in Zarandona
National Police officers have arrested a youth who has just reached the age of majority, of Ukrainian nationality, in connection with the death of David, a 40-year-old resident of the Murcian district of Zarandona. The arrest took place on Wednesday morning, according to La Opinión de Murcia.
The deceased was found in a park in the municipality with serious injuries and barely conscious. Medical services transported him to a hospital, where he died hours later. The news has shocked residents of this area of Murcia, where the man was affectionately known as "El Duque".
Sources close to the case indicate that the investigation is being classified as homicide, not murder. The legal difference lies in the absence of aggravating circumstances such as treachery, cruelty, or economic motivation. When death results from a fight, as appears to be the case here, it is understood that there was no prior intent to kill.
The arrested individual is being held at Ceballos Police Station and will be brought before the Duty Court in Murcia no later than Saturday. He is facing a charge of reckless homicide, although the investigation remains active and further arrests may be made.
The Homicide Group is leading the inquiry. Authorities have urged the public not to spread speculation—some allegations pointed to the involvement of unaccompanied foreign youths—and to place their trust in law enforcement.
Neighbours and family members bade farewell to David on the preceding Tuesday with a Eucharist in the parish church and a subsequent gathering at which flowers and candles were offered in his memory.
