A 29-year-old man was taken into custody by municipal police officers in Pamplona on Saturday, accused of committing rape. The incident took place in the early morning hours, around 4:45 am, in the area of Vuelta del Castillo, a green space in the Navarrese city that has been hosting thousands of people in recent days due to the San Fermín festivities.
The city council, through its Spokespersons' Board, issued a statement in which it described the facts as unacceptable and expressed its firm condemnation. In the same document, the governing team conveyed their unconditional support to the survivor and those around her, emphasising the respect due to her privacy.
The local corporation reaffirmed its strong opposition to all acts of gender-based violence, assault or sexist behaviour occurring in the municipality. Furthermore, it committed to working on strategies aimed at eradicating these crimes, improving citizen protection and ensuring that women enjoy full freedom in all spheres.
As a demonstration of this determination, the Town Hall joined the demonstration called for by local feminist associations and made an appeal to citizens to attend the rejection rallies.
In parallel, the Local Civil Protection Board was informed at its Saturday session of three complaints regarding inappropriate touching that occurred on the last day of festivities. One of these three reports resulted in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
