A 26-year-old man is now in the hands of justice after agents of the state security force linked him to a brutal assault against a passer-by he did not know. The incident occurred at the end of June on a street in the Cristo de la Epidemia neighbourhood, in the Málaga capital.

The attack took place near half past eleven at night. The person assaulted was sitting on a public bench when, unexpectedly, he received a sharp blow to the back of his neck from behind. Simultaneously, the attacker inflicted a deep gash on his face and neck that required extensive medical stitching to close.

The police investigation revealed that, moments before this incident, the same individual had attempted to steal a gold jewel from a woman's neck. The failed theft met with resistance from the woman's husband, who came to her aid according to accounts from eyewitnesses.

To identify the suspected perpetrator, officers reviewed images captured by cameras in the area, collected statements from people who witnessed what happened, and conducted other investigative procedures. Finally, the previous Tuesday they found him on a central avenue of the city, where they proceeded to arrest him.

The arrest history of the detainee does not begin here. Just months earlier, in the province of Alicante, he had already been required by the authorities after assaulting another stranger in a similar manner. On that occasion, he used a cutting implement that experts identified as a razor blade. In both cases, the victims agreed that they had never seen the attacker before and that there was no prior conflict that would explain the violence.

The criminal proceedings opened in Málaga impute the suspect with the offences of causing serious injury and attempted theft with force. Both the detainee and all documentation gathered have been sent to the judicial authority in charge of conducting proceedings for arrests in the coastal city capital.
