A 17-year-old boy, named Louis, lost his life in the Aude department after being ambushed and savagely beaten. Five suspects, aged between 16 and 20, have been held in custody pending trial for murder. This tragedy caused shock waves and prompted attempts at ideological exploitation that the executive firmly condemned.
On Saturday 27 June, Laurent Nuñez, the Interior Minister, denounced "exploitation by the far-right" surrounding this crime. "Despite what some claim, there is no proven racist character to this crime, according to the public prosecutor," he stated to the newspaper Le Parisien. The prosecutor's office representative had already ruled out this line of inquiry.
The deceased, who was in the care of child welfare services, succumbed after being lured into a trap and violently assaulted. The minister expressed his concerns about "rising violence among young people". He called for reflection on the support provided to minors in care and on "this completely unrestrained violence from a section of youth".
Two demonstrations were planned in the region that weekend. The first, on Saturday evening, drew very few people despite significant reinforcements of law enforcement. Leaflets distributed by identitarian activists encouraged people to join a second gathering on Sunday called "Justice for All", describing the attackers as "a gang of hoodlums".
The relatives of the deceased rejected any instrumentalisation. Through Louis's paternal aunt, they made clear they would not take part in these gatherings, whilst acknowledging the solidarity of citizens. Any "political exploitation" is ruled out.
