Louis, a 17-year-old boy, died in Narbonne, in southern France, after receiving a violent beating from five youths who, according to the investigation, lay in wait for him to take revenge for the fact that he had reported an earlier assault to the authorities. On 12 June, Louis had already been struck by a group of people. Following this first incident, he went to the police station to file a complaint. A week later, in the night of 19 to 20 June, he was lured to a construction site in Narbonne, where five individuals inflicted a brutal beating that left him unconscious. According to several reports, part of the assault was filmed on video. Hours later, he was discovered in a critical state and doctors were only able to keep him alive for three days.
According to various French media outlets, his attackers allegedly shouted at him: "You won't go to the police any more," in obvious reference to the complaint filed. The public prosecutor's office is working on the hypothesis of a premeditated ambush motivated by this report.
Five suspects, aged 16 to 19, were charged and remanded in custody provisionally. Three of them are minors. Louis was placed under the supervision of child welfare services, which prompted strong criticism of the protection he received.
Leaders from the French right reacted with severity. Bruno Retailleau, of the Les Républicains party, evoked the "barbarisation" of society, whilst Jordan Bardella, of the Rassemblement national, denounced the fact that the young man had been "lynched to death" with "unimaginable" violence and that the assault was filmed by the attackers themselves.
