A construction worker discovered the lifeless body of a young man on Saturday 20 June 2026 on a construction site at Quai d'Alsace, in the Aude. Emergency services alerted early in the day found that the boy, aged 17, had suffered numerous injuries to his face. The prosecutor in Narbonne, Jean-Philippe Rey, specified in a statement that the victim had bruising around the eyes, frontal haematomas and bleeding from the mouth and nose.
The young man, named Louis, was living in a residential care facility where his family had placed him. He was initially admitted to the local hospital, then transferred to Perpignan due to the severity of his condition. Despite five days of treatment, he died on Tuesday afternoon.
Police officers recovered video footage of the attack that had been shared on the internet. The images show a group of several individuals beating the victim before leaving him unconscious at the scene. Five people, three of whom are minors, were arrested. According to La Montagne, the connection between the suspects and Louis came from the residential care facilities where they had all stayed in Occitanie. The magistrate noted that those charged had virtually no criminal record.
On 23 June 2026, the five were brought before an investigating judge. They were charged with attempted murder and held in custody. This decision came at the very moment Louis's death was announced. Murder carries a sentence of life imprisonment.
Political leaders reacted to this tragedy. Gabriel Attal, a presidential election candidate, wrote on X that "our sorrow is immense". Marine Le Pen denounced a "daily barbarism" and an "ordeal" causing "immense anger" among the population.
