Lyhanna case: disciplinary proceedings launched against deputy prosecutor in Auch
The Keeper of the Seals announced the opening of an administrative inquiry against the deputy prosecutor in Auch, following the publication of a damning report on the dysfunctions that preceded Lyhanna's death. The 11-year-old girl had been raped and then killed at the end of May in Fleurance, in the Gers department.
The document, commissioned by the executive, highlights the absence of judicial action against the main suspect, a 41-year-old man named Jérôme Barella. He was already the subject of a complaint for sexual assault against another child, filed several months earlier by the mother of a ten-year-old girl. Yet no measures had been taken against him.
In light of these findings, the Prime Minister described the facts as a "truth of extreme gravity", acknowledging that the child protection system had "failed". The Interior Minister for his part ordered a command inquiry into the handling of the previous complaint, while proceeding with the transfer of two gendarmes.
Gérald Darmanin, questioned on the TF1 television set, indicated that he would refer the case to the Superior Council of the Judiciary following the disciplinary proceedings. He demanded that the conclusions of this inquiry be submitted to him before the end of summer. The magistrate concerned has been barred from handling any case involving minors pending the decision.
The Minister admitted to "very significant failings" due to individual errors, while refusing to resign. He affirmed his determination to intensify the fight against violence against children for the remainder of his term of office.
