A French court examined on 25 June the case of a former intelligence service officer prosecuted for far-right extremism. Jean-Paul Caviggia, a retired police officer, appeared to answer the accusations brought against him.
During the hearing, the defendant sought to minimise the significance of his past statements. He presented his hostile comments towards Jews, homosexuals and people of foreign origin as mere jokes without malice. Regarding objects linked to the Nazi regime that he possessed, notably a sculpture representing the German dictator, he claimed that he kept them as historical documentation.
The hearing was marked by an unusual amount of time devoted to examination of the interior layout of the defendant's home and writings that fell outside the scope of the charges brought against him. The defendant contested being an adherent of Nazi ideology, despite the material evidence found at his residence.
