A 20-year-old man employed at a leisure centre has been remanded in custody for sexual assault on a 4-year-old child. The incidents occurred in Divonne-les-Bains, a locality of approximately 10,000 inhabitants bordering Lake Geneva in the Ain department.
The suspect had no criminal record and worked at a facility providing after-school activities for children from the town's nursery and primary schools. According to information gathered by Le Progrès, gendarmes intervened in broad daylight on 18 June, directly at the centre where he worked. The arrest took place in front of the children and adults present, with the young man being handcuffed in everyone's view.
The assault is believed to have taken place the day before the arrest. The victim's parents noticed disturbing marks on their daughter's body and took her to see a doctor, who confirmed the sexual violence. The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office specified that the man was charged with "rape of a minor by a person exercising authority over the victim", the latter being a participant in after-school activities. He was remanded in custody, as requested by the prosecution.
