The message aims to alert them to a suspected illicit trade in fentanyl, a pain-relief substance from the opioid family whose effectiveness exceeds that of morphine one hundredfold.
Health officials have raised the hypothesis of a criminal organisation obtaining the medication through forged prescriptions. In North America, this substance has already been subject to extensive diverted use, resulting in thousands of deaths from overdose.
The document addressed to professional regulatory bodies, unions representing healthcare professionals (URPS), as well as doctors and pharmacists in Brittany, aims to increase vigilance against unusual prescriptions. The goal is to prevent the distribution of this synthetic narcotic outside of any therapeutic framework.
