A man was caught by Châteauroux municipal police in the midst of a burglary at the home of an 83-year-old woman. Alerted by neighbours, officers arrested the individual who had hidden himself in the basement.

In the morning of 24 June 2026, around 6 a.m., Châteauroux municipal police (Indre) were alerted by neighbours reporting a suspicious individual attempting to enter homes. A patrol team was dispatched immediately to the scene.
A witness informed the two municipal police officers that a man appeared to have entered through a window in the house of a resident aged 83 years old. The officers noted signs of forced entry on the window. They quietly made their way into the property and surprised the burglar in the act of stealing items.
Caught off guard, the offender attempted to flee and took refuge in the basement, concealed behind wooden boards. The police officers quickly found him and arrested him without incident. During a search, they discovered stolen goods on him as well as a multi-purpose knife.
The man, who had a high level of alcohol intoxication, was handed over to a judicial police officer. The owner, awakened by the noise, was reassured by the municipal police officers. They subsequently guided her to file a complaint.
