Capesterre-Belle-Eau: two dead and two wounded in bar shooting
On Tuesday 30 June at around 8 p.m., a violent shooting shook a bar located in the heart of the town of Capesterre-Belle-Eau, in Guadeloupe. The establishment was hosting a local celebration at the time.
Suddenly, a volley of detonations transformed the atmosphere into a scene of horror. Two female customers succumbed to their gunshot wounds. Furthermore, two additional individuals were hit, notably a three-year-old boy. Rescue workers estimate that the vital prognosis of the survivors is at risk.
Upon the alert being raised, a large contingent of fire brigade officers, a SMUR team and police officers converged on the site. The perimeter was secured to allow investigators to operate under proper conditions. The mayor of the municipality, Jean-Philippe Courtois, presented himself at the scene to express his solidarity with the affected families and the emergency responders.
For now, the motives behind this tragedy remain unclear. Investigators have not yet determined whether it is a quarrel, a clash between gangs or some other cause entirely. The identity of the shooter or shooters has not been disclosed, nor their current legal status — either at large or in police custody.
Emergency operations continued several hours after the incident, raising concerns that the death toll could worsen.
