More than two decades after the macabre discovery of a woman in a rainwater tank in Saint-Quirin, in Moselle, investigators have made a major breakthrough. The deceased, found dismembered and wrapped in bin bags in early 2005, has finally been identified. At the same time, law enforcement officials have proceeded with the arrest of a man suspected of being involved in the crime.
The international criminal police organisation Interpol announced this breakthrough on Tuesday afternoon. The case had been integrated into the "Identify Me" campaign, launched to obtain information about more than forty unidentified women found dead across Europe. This is the first time since the launch of this initiative that a suspect has been apprehended in an old femicide case.
Saint-Quirin is located a few dozen kilometres from the German border. For more than twenty years, the identity of the victim remained a complete mystery for investigators.
The "Identify Me" campaign brings together police services from six European countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany and Spain. According to Interpol, the majority of the women in question have been murdered or died in suspicious or unexplained circumstances. Nine of them had been discovered on German territory.
On the website dedicated to this operation, Interpol had published facial reconstructions as well as photographs of jewellery and clothing found with the bodies. To date, five of the victims have been able to be identified. The organisation continues to seek public assistance for the remaining cases.
