A 31-year-old man was tried in immediate appearance proceedings in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (La Manche) on Monday 15 June 2026. A father of one child with a second on the way, he had held a permanent job for two years at the Flamanville nuclear power station, following a lengthy period of temporary work.
During the hearing, the accused shed tears on several occasions. He admitted to trading in contraband tobacco since January 2026 in order to improve his income. His operations consisted of the acquisition, transportation and sale of illegally manufactured cigarettes, both in Cherbourg and in the neighbouring Grand Duchy.
The court imposed a sentence of ten months' deprivation of liberty combined with an electronic monitoring requirement.
