The tragedy was reported by a couple who called the police "after hearing a child's screams". Investigators identified the 16-year-old suspect on Monday morning, while the 15-year-old girl turned herself in at the police station and was taken into custody on Monday afternoon.
The statements of the two suspects are contradictory. Prosecutor Téguia explained that on Saturday, the day of the tragedy, the three young people were fishing together on the Vilaine. "They had arranged to meet the next day to fish", he specified. The two suspects admitted to assaulting Théo and strangling him, before fleeing with the victim's fishing equipment and personal effects, which were recovered during searches at their homes.
Théo had told his parents that the 16-year-old boy, whom he had met, had "given" him this fishing equipment.
