Two women of Romanian nationality and a veterinary surgeon are being tried in Évry, near Paris, for their involvement in a vast puppy trafficking operation between Romania and France, as well as for animal cruelty.

Two women of Romanian origin and a veterinary practitioner working in the municipality of Évry are appearing before French courts, accused of participating in a large-scale puppy smuggling network between Romania and France, as well as animal cruelty, according to the AFP news agency cited by Digi24.ro.
The veterinary surgeon is being prosecuted for fraud in an organised gang. According to a police source, he allegedly implanted electronic chips in only one out of a batch of 300 young dachshunds imported from Romania last year, registered under the names of often fictitious owners.
The two Romanian defendants arranged the breeding and sale of the animals via online advertisements, according to the same source. They are also charged with providing buyers with incorrect information about the age and health status of the puppies, as well as for the abuse suffered by the animals.
The investigation was opened at the end of 2025 following reports of animal cruelty in an apartment in the Paris region. Eight puppies were found there in appalling conditions.
Complaints filed by animal protection associations at the beginning of this year revealed similar facts. One of them led to the discovery of four puppies thrown in a rubbish bag.
The investigations showed that each animal was sold for 1,800 euros. The transactions took place in a house located in Saulx-les-Chartreux, south of Paris, where approximately 50 pedigree dachshunds were seized and six people arrested. A seventh arrest followed shortly afterwards when dog health records bearing the identities of invented owners were found at a woman's home.
One of the two Romanian women admitted to importing puppies from Romania for 500 euros each, with the intention of reselling them for 900 euros. She also admitted to using a false identity to microchip them and having links with the veterinarian in question. The second defendant confirmed owning dachshunds but denied any involvement in the trafficking.
