A criminal court in the Doubs has imposed a sentence of twelve years in detention on a young man for the murder of a man in his thirties that occurred on 11 August 2024 in eastern France. The incident took place in the Amitié district of Besançon, where a heatwave had driven residents outdoors in the evening.
That evening, several residents had brought camping chairs down to a car park to escape the heat. Around 23:00, the victim, aged 27, briefly left to go up to his accommodation. During his absence, the man who would later be convicted, then aged 17 and living in the same building, sat down on his chair.
Upon returning to the spot, the man found his seat occupied, which sparked a verbal altercation. The young man went back up to his flat before coming down again armed with a blade. He then struck the chair's owner several times, with one blow to the back that proved fatal.
Under the care of child welfare services and originally from Mali, the teenager had no criminal record. He admitted to using the blade whilst maintaining that he had been subjected to violence by people present in the car park, a claim rejected by the prosecution.
The judgement, delivered on 30 June following a closed-door hearing, found aggravated homicide due to the use of narcotics. The public prosecutor had sought ten years in detention. Details of the trial were reported by the news outlet franceinfo.
