243 people were taken into police custody across France following the Fête de la Musique, according to figures released on Monday by the Interior Ministry. In Paris, where more than two million people attended open-air performances, police made 148 arrests. Two individuals—a man and a woman aged 40—were stabbed during the night of Sunday to Monday, respectively in the Toulouse region and in Colomiers. Both victims were taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Investigators are examining surveillance camera footage to identify the perpetrators of the knife attacks. Police services are also examining several complaints filed by women claiming to have been injected with syringes during the festivities. The authorities reported having recorded more than a dozen such incidents.
In one specific case, a man was arrested in the capital after several syringes were discovered on him. He, however, managed to escape before the end of the checks. The Interior Ministry further confirmed that investigations had been opened into two alleged rapes and several sexual assaults.
A young woman reported a sexual assault committed in an apartment in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. In the Gagny suburbs, a man aged 48 was arrested, suspected of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. In Nogent-sur-Marne, a 15-year-old girl reported being raped after attending a concert organised as part of the festival.
Beyond these serious incidents, law enforcement intervened in numerous cases of theft, property damage and brawls. In central Paris, car windows were broken and attempted break-ins to shops were reported.
For this 2026 edition, the authorities deployed nearly 5,000 police officers and gendarmes. This security operation had been reinforced following incidents that occurred during the previous edition, when sexual assaults and syringe-injection incidents had already been reported.
The Fête de la Musique brings together millions of participants each year in towns across France. Despite the provision once again this year of dedicated safe spaces for women and vulnerable people, the scale of the incidents once more raised questions about security at this popular event.
