A 31-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with killing his two-year-old child.
Kevin Kerjean, a French national born in the Central African Republic, appeared before Guildford Crown Court by video link from Wandsworth prison. He used an interpreter to confirm his identity during the hearing.
Prosecutors have charged Kerjean with murder, as well as one count of rape and one count of sexual assault on a girl under 13 years old. Surrey Police said he was the father of the young girl found dead in a house on Pyrcroft Road, Chertsey, on Thursday evening.
The child, later identified by prosecutors as Assia Kerjean, was not named during court proceedings. She was found at the property where her father lived.
The Home Office confirmed that Kerjean had entered the United Kingdom legally and had submitted an application for EU settled status in December 2020. Permission to stay was granted in March 2021, with an extension allowing him to remain until March 2031.
The defendant is due to appear before the same court again on 14 September. He remains in custody until that date.
