Two teenagers, a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, are being held in Rennes, in western France, following the murder of an 11-year-old boy whose body was found on the banks of the Vilaine.
The body of Théo was discovered on Sunday afternoon in a wooded area. According to the autopsy, death was caused by strangulation. A couple nearby heard children screaming and called the police. Officers found the child unconscious, with a bath towel around his neck.
According to prosecutor Frédéric Téillé, the two young people knew the victim. On Saturday, they had gone fishing together on the Vilaine. The two minors claimed to have attacked Théo in revenge and to seize fishing equipment worth a few dozen euros, which they alleged he had taken from them.
The 16-year-old boy was arrested on Monday morning. The 15-year-old girl turned herself in later that afternoon. Their statements are contradictory. Authorities found the victim's fishing tools and personal belongings in their homes.
On Tuesday afternoon, they were brought before the court, where the charge of homicide against a minor was to be notified to them.
