The tanker Deliver, believed to be linked to the Russian "shadow fleet", was brought on Friday into waters off Marseille, one day after its interception by French authorities off Sicily.
The vessel is one of nine ships of this type that have been seized in Europe since the start of the year. All are suspected of having served Moscow in circumventing Western sanctions imposed on Russian oil.
The Deliver has been transferred to the Gulf of Fos, where it will remain at the disposal of magistrates in Marseille until the end of the investigation.
The Russian Embassy in France characterised the seizure as "another act of piracy", claiming it was "illegal and unacceptable under international law", according to TASS news agency.
A French military source indicated that the vessel was flying the Cameroonian flag, although it had been removed from that country's registries several weeks earlier. This means it was sailing without a flag, thus violating international maritime law.
