Hackers strike cooling systems at regional blood donation centres in France
Regional blood banks in France fell victim to a cyber-attack on 2 November, as announced by the French Ministry of Health. According to Dikastiko.gr, blood supplies stored at the facilities sustained no damage.
"Many regional facilities of the French blood donation centre (EFS) were affected by an incident related to cyber-security, which struck certain monitoring and control systems of cooling chambers," the ministry's official statement reads.
"The situation is now under control and under close monitoring. The security of blood supplies was protected thanks to the monitoring and alarm systems of the facilities, while preventive measures were immediately implemented," the same statement adds.
Authorities are conducting investigations into how the incident occurred and the circumstances surrounding it. In parallel, they are working to identify equipment that may have been affected, as well as to determine the conditions and timeline for restoring services.
The incident follows a series of similar attacks at European level. On Monday, hackers breached cooling systems at stores in eight European countries, forcing them to discard large quantities of food. This attack points to similar incidents that occurred at dozens of supermarkets in France three weeks earlier.
