Referral to Crown Court for the murder of a municipal officer
The Grenoble prosecutor's office sought on Monday 2 November the referral of Abdoul Diallo before a Crown Court for "the murder of a person charged with a public service mission", according to BFM TV. Diallo, who was 25 years old at the time of the incident, is suspected of having killed Lilian Dejean, a 49-year-old municipal officer, in September 2024.
The circumstances date back to 8 September 2024. After causing a traffic accident while driving a powerful rental car, Diallo opened fire on Dejean, who was attempting to restrain him. The officer was hit twice in the chest and died from his injuries a few hours later.
Analysis of surveillance footage allowed the prosecutor's office to reconstruct the sequence of shots. Diallo first fired in the direction of the ground without looking at his target, then extended his arm parallel to the ground while turning his head to the right — a posture allowing him to strike a lethal area. These two shots were fired a few seconds apart.
During questioning in August, Diallo claimed he had never intended to kill Dejean or do him harm. The prosecutor's office notes in its submission that he "regretted his act, intended to flee, as he was not in his normal state". He also described Dejean's action as "civic".
Six other people are also subject to a request for referral to the magistrates' court. They are suspected of having helped Diallo escape while knowing that he had committed a crime.
