A judicial reconstruction of the murder of Philippine, a 19-year-old student whose body was discovered buried in Bois de Boulogne in 2024, took place on Monday 29 June in the presence of the main suspect, according to midilibre.fr citing a source close to the case.
The judicial police arrived mid-morning at the entrance to Bois de Boulogne, near Porte Dauphine, in western Paris, according to AFP journalists present on the spot. Law enforcement was deployed around the area at the start of operations.
By early evening, the reconstruction was still ongoing. The suspect provided information about the sequence of events, the same source specified. The autopsy carried out shortly after the crime had revealed "injuries to the vulvular and anal areas" and DNA had been found, according to another source close to the case cited by AFP.
Profile of the suspect
Taha O., a Moroccan national who was 22 years old at the time, was committed for trial in November 2024 for murder and rape as a repeat offender, charges that expose him to life imprisonment. He was subject to an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) and had just been released from administrative detention at the time of the facts.
He fled to Switzerland the day after the murder before being arrested in that country on 24 September 2024, then extradited to France. Convicted in 2021 for rape, he had been released in June 2024 "at the end of his sentence", according to the Paris public prosecutor's office, then placed in administrative detention.
Upon his release, he had been placed under house arrest in a hotel in Yonne, where he never reported. Having failed to comply with his reporting obligation, he had been registered on the list of persons wanted the day before the murder.
Political debate and legislative reform
The case had sparked significant emotion, including from President Emmanuel Macron, who had expressed "the emotion of the entire Nation" at what he had described as an "odious crime". Bruno Retailleau, then Interior Minister, had called for the legal arsenal to be updated.
Parliament ratified in mid-June the extension of the length of administrative detention for foreign nationals in irregular situations deemed dangerous. This measure, criticised by the left, was presented by the right and centre as a direct response to Philippine's murder.
In a letter addressed to AFP on 29 September 2024, a previous victim of Taha O. had called for the "establishment of an investigation committee" on the question of "recidivism in gender-based and sexual crimes".
