A 25-year-old man has been in court since 22 June facing trial for an attempted murder committed in July 2024 in the Arceaux district of Montpellier. He is accused of attacking a sixth-year medical student with a box cutter as she was returning home.

The incident dates to the evening of 17 July 2024. The victim, named Manon, was returning to her home located beneath the Saint-Clément aqueduct when the attacker followed her and attacked her with a blade. Police arrested the suspect two weeks later, on 17 July.

According to psychiatric assessment carried out before the trial, Soulaïmana A. is described as a sexual predator with a "complex" and "atypical" criminal profile. Specialists believe he suffers from no psychiatric disorder, but remains difficult to manage therapeutically.

Born and raised in Mayotte, the defendant led a nocturnal existence in the alleyways of the Arceaux district. His flatmate, interviewed after the arrest, described an individual who kept to himself. The latter told investigators he was entirely unaware of his housemate's nocturnal activities and did not know whom he might meet during his wanderings.

During summer 2024, the suspect had taken to following young women through the streets of the district for several minutes before changing direction. This stalking behaviour repeated regularly over the nights. He would return home at dawn, sleep during the day, then resume his rounds once the sun had set.
