Narbonne: 17-year-old teenager killed by five attackers, five suspects in custody

A 17-year-old young man died in Narbonne, in the Aude, after being violently beaten by five other youths on a construction site in the town. The blows, struck to the head whilst the victim lay on the ground, were recorded on video. The public broadcaster decided not to broadcast these images.
Left for dead on the spot, the boy was transported by emergency services but did not survive, succumbing to his injuries a few days after the incident. He had been living in a nearby child protection home for two months.
Five suspects in provisional detention
Police arrested five people: two adults and three teenagers. All were charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody. The magistrate at the Narbonne public prosecutor's office, Jean-Philippe Rey, stated that none of the suspects had a previous criminal record. He also clarified that the victim's profile presented nothing unusual.
The motive for this assault has not yet been established. The judicial authority has, however, ruled out the possibility of a racist motive.
The victim had already filed a complaint
In May of this year, the young man had already gone to the police station to report violence. He had then identified other youths, who are not among the five people currently charged.
Local residents in shock
The tragedy plunged the neighbourhood into horror. Wreaths and a portrait of the deceased were placed at the scene. A resident, Brigitte Vallat, went to the location to pay her respects: "Five against one, that's cowardice," she said. A neighbour, Jean-Marie Mariès, described an adolescent who was "too kind", who was easily influenced.
