Two gendarmes were struck by gunfire on Saturday 20 June in Nogent-le-Rotrou, Eure-et-Loir, by an 82-year-old resident. The alert was raised around 19:00 by the shooter's wife, who was concerned about her husband's agitated behaviour after he left their house armed with a long gun and uttering delirious statements, according to franceinfo.
On arrival, the officers attempted to make contact with the retired man, who had entrenched himself in his garden. The individual then fired three rounds, striking two gendarmes in the lower limbs. Law enforcement responded, apparently wounding the suspect in the hand. He fled into the basement of his home. He was finally captured around 22:50 by a GIGN unit without offering any resistance.
A former shopkeeper in the commune, the octogenarian had never previously been flagged by police services. He was taken to a hospital in Le Mans. A psychiatric expert will need to evaluate him shortly.
The Chartres prosecutor's office has launched two parallel investigations. One targets the retired man for attempted murder of a representative of the authorities, assigned to the local criminal investigation unit. The other concerns the gendarmes' gunfire and has been handed to the Orléans investigation unit.
