The National Financial Prosecutor's Office has sought five years of ineligibility against Ary Chalus. The former president of the Guadeloupe regional council is being tried for misappropriation of public funds and breach of trust.
At the final hearing of the trial, the PNF representative also requested a sentence of four years' imprisonment, including two years suspended, as well as a fine of 100,000 euros. The accused is suspected of having used public funds for personal purposes during his term in office.
The allegations concern financing of work carried out at his private residence, paid for by the regional authority. Significant sums are said to have been diverted to carry out renovations to this property located in Guadeloupe.
The defence has contested these accusations, arguing that the work was of an official nature and that its financing by the region was justified. Mr Chalus's lawyers also highlighted his political record and his commitments to the development of the island.
The verdict is expected in the coming weeks. In the event of conviction, ineligibility could deprive the former elected official of any electoral office for several years.
