The trial of the girl by the A10

According to TF1 Info, the trial of the parents of Inass Touloub, a four-year-old girl discovered dead beside the A10 motorway in August 1987, opened on Monday 2 November before the assizes court of Loir-et-Cher in Blois. The mother, Halima El Bakhti, is appearing on charges of torture and acts of barbarism resulting in death without intent to cause death; the father, Ahmed Touloub, is charged with complicity. Both defendants are appearing at liberty.

The child was only identified thirty-one years after her discovery, in June 2018. Her remains, found wrapped in a blue blanket, had long remained unidentified. It was this blanket, preserved as evidence, that ultimately allowed the case to be resolved.

The two parents presented themselves at the court on Tuesday morning. Halima El Bakhti was wearing a white headscarf and a beige coat; Ahmed Touloub, leaning on a cane, had pulled a cap down over his head. Seated side by side in the front row of the courtroom, the former spouses exchanged neither words nor glances. Their children were absent from the public gallery, which nevertheless included numerous spectators, including several residents of Blois who had followed the case since its beginning.

In the witness box, Halima El Bakhti recalled that she was a schoolteacher, although that was forty-five years ago. A nurse who came to attend the trial, who had worked at the maternity ward in Blois in 1987, testified to journalists about the lasting impact of this case on the local community. "I was a nurse at the maternity ward in Blois at the time and I remember that we pulled out loads of files to try to find perhaps some clues," she reported. The trial is expected to last several days.
