At midday, the judicial police arrived at the entrance to the woods near Porte Dauphine (west), according to AFP journalists on site. Police forces were deployed throughout the surrounding area. By early evening, the reconstruction was still ongoing; the suspect provided indications about how the events unfolded, a source close to the case told AFP.
Taha O., a Moroccan national who was 22 years old at the time, was charged in November 2024 with murder and rape with a record of prior convictions, offences which carry a sentence of life imprisonment. He was subject to a deportation order and had just been released from detention at the time of the crime.
The autopsy revealed, shortly after the incident, "injuries to the vulval and anal areas" and DNA was found, according to another source close to the case. The suspect fled to Switzerland the day after the crime and was arrested there on 24 September 2024, before being extradited to France.
Taha O. had already been convicted in 2021 for rape and was released in June 2024 "at the end of his sentence", according to the Paris prosecutor's office. He was subsequently placed in an administrative detention centre. Upon his release, he had been assigned to reside in a hotel in Yonne where he never reported. Having failed to comply with his reporting requirement, he was added to the wanted persons database the day before the murder.
The crime provoked intense national concern. Emmanuel Macron expressed "the emotion of the entire nation" in response to what he described as an "odious crime". The case also sparked intense public debate over the management of foreigners in irregular situations deemed dangerous.
Parliament ratified in mid-June the lengthening of the duration of administrative detention for this category of people, a measure presented on the right and centre as a direct response to Philippine's murder, but criticised on the left. Bruno Retailleau, then Interior Minister, had called for the need to "develop [the] legal arsenal".
In a letter addressed on 29 September 2024 to AFP, a previous victim of Taha O. spoke out to nuance the terms of the debate and called for the "launch of an inquiry commission" on the question of "repeat sexual and gender-based crimes".
