The suspect, Taha O., a Moroccan national who was 22 at the time, was present during the reconstruction and provided details on the course of events, according to the same source. Charged in November 2024 with murder and rape with a prior conviction, he faces life imprisonment. By early evening, operations were still ongoing.
A legal history at the heart of the debate
Taha O. had been convicted in 2021 for rape and was released in June 2024 "at the end of his sentence", according to the Paris prosecutor's office. Upon release, he was placed in administrative detention with an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) and was assigned to reside in a hotel in the Yonne — where he never reported. For failing to comply with his reporting obligation, he was registered on the list of persons being sought the day before the murder.
The suspect had fled to Switzerland the day after the incident and was arrested there on 24 September 2024, before being extradited to France. The autopsy revealed "injuries to the vulval and anal areas" and "DNA" had been "found", according to another source close to the case cited by the AFP.
National emotion and legislative response
The case provoked widespread public concern, including at the highest levels of state: Emmanuel Macron expressed "the emotion of the entire nation" at this "heinous crime". Bruno Retailleau, then Interior Minister, called for "the development of legal measures" concerning the detention of foreigners in irregular status.
In mid-June, Parliament approved an extension of the duration of administrative detention for foreigners in irregular status deemed dangerous. Presented on the right and centre as a direct response to Philippine's murder, the measure was criticised by the left.
In a letter sent to the AFP on 29 September 2024, a previous victim of Taha O. spoke out to nuance the terms of the debate and called for "the launch of an inquiry commission" on the question of "recidivism in sexist and sexual crimes".
