On Wednesday 24 June, the judiciary charged a boy of ten and a half years old with stabbing and attempting to rape a 22-year-old woman in Côtes-d'Armor. Prosecutor Julien Wattebled issued a statement on the matter.

On 15 June, the victim was training in a wooded area of Saint-Brieuc when a young man approached her and ordered her to undress. After she refused, he struck her twice with a blade, injuring her arm and abdomen, then fled.

Police officers on patrol identified a suspect on Tuesday who matched exactly the description provided by the complainant. They seized from him a sharp object identical to the one used during the attack.

Given his age, the defendant was held in police custody for twelve hours, which was extended once on the decision of the prosecution. When questioned, he admitted his responsibility for the acts. The investigating judge opened an inquiry for attempted murder and attempted sexual assault with a weapon.

As French law does not permit criminal conviction of children so young, the judge imposed a provisional judicial educational measure. The teenager is required to remain at home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and to stay away from the victim. The judicial protection of youth service will ensure these obligations are adhered to. A hospitalisation procedure for the defendant has moreover been launched.
