Saumur court handed down a sentence of ten years' imprisonment on Tuesday 23 June 2026 against Johan Bontemps, a prominent figure in drug trafficking in the Saumur region (Maine-et-Loire). The man, known by the nickname "le J", continued to organise a drug network despite his detention at Argentan remand prison (Orne), according to Ouest-France.
Aged under 30, the repeat offender had already accumulated around ten years in detention from previous convictions, with the first record on his criminal file for drug trafficking-related offences dating from 2015. His release is not considered possible until 2037 given the totality of his sentences.
Prosecutor Marine Labarthe emphasised to the court that penal sanctions had clearly not deterred the defendant. She expressed her concern at the persistence of his unlawful activities whilst in detention.
The defendant was tried for relaunching an extensive drug trafficking operation from within the penitentiary establishment.
