On Monday, investigators conducted an operation at a house located in Champigny-sur-Marne, in the Paris suburbs, as part of an investigation into a drugs network. The search resulted in the discovery of an authentic work by Pablo Picasso, previously stolen from a warehouse in the capital.
The officers seized around twenty kilogrammes of cannabis resin, a sum of cash, as well as luxury items worth several hundred thousand euros. Four people were arrested during this operation.
The real bombshell was the discovery of a canvas painted by the Spanish artist before the Second World War. Experts confirmed its authenticity. According to information from Le Parisien, the portrait would represent Marie-Thérèse Walter, the painter's companion from 1927 to 1935. Its market value would be between 12 and 15 million euros.
The theft of this work had not been widely publicised and did not feature among the most celebrated art thefts of recent years. The Créteil public prosecutor's office opened a judicial investigation for theft and handling of stolen goods.
