The Somme assize court has imposed the maximum sentence on Jérôme Debeauvais, 52, found guilty of killing three family members in April 2022 in their home in Amiens. The crimes took place on rue Maberly, in the Montières neighbourhood.
From the outset of the proceedings, the accused admitted to taking the life of his partner Jennifer, aged 26, their young son Éliam, 3, and Amélia, the younger sister of his partner, 25. He contested, however, the rape charges brought against him.
The tragedy was triggered by an altercation concerning the man's eldest daughter from a previous relationship. He wanted the child to come and live with them. His partner had opposed this, allegedly using hurtful language towards the girl. This reply allegedly made the accused's blood boil, in his own words. He then strangled Jennifer and stayed by her body throughout the night, unable to bring himself to alert the authorities.
Over the forty-eight hours that followed, he continued to look after Éliam, preparing food for him and playing with him, whilst concealing the death of his mother. He eventually put the child to sleep using medication before taking his life with a pillow. He justified this act by stating his intention to end his own life and his refusal to abandon his son to life.
In the meantime, he had lured Amélia into a trap. He remembers seeing her attempt to reason with him. To cover his tracks, he drafted messages from the mobile phones of the two sisters, simulating their presence to their employers and loved ones. These texts, unusual for their numerous spelling mistakes, alerted Jennifer's employer. The latter demanded a medical certificate. The silence that followed prompted her to send a colleague to check on the spot. This colleague found a note mentioning a serious road accident involving the victim's partner. In reality, the man had deliberately caused the crash in the hope of dying.
Rescue workers entered the apartment and discovered the three lifeless bodies. During the trial, photographs of the bodies were projected, causing the families to collapse. The accused merely said that these images would haunt him.
Relatives testified to the cheerful and reliable character of the two young women. The accused's past was marked by violence suffered during his childhood and aggressive behaviour towards his former partners.
