On Tuesday, 23 June 2026, the criminal court in Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) tried a large-scale drug trafficking network operating in western France. Eight defendants appeared before the court.
The presiding judge began by hearing the man investigators identified as the head of the network. This man, the only one of the accused who had not been questioned the previous day, appeared before the court wearing a white tracksuit. He quickly admitted the facts he was accused of.
The magistrates notably reproached him for having had drugs brought into the detention centre in Argentan, in the Orne département, where he was serving a sentence. From his cell, he allegedly coordinated the distribution of drugs to the outside world.
This case illustrates the persistence of drug trafficking orchestrated from within penitentiary establishments themselves. According to Ouest-France, the main accused was sentenced to ten years in prison.
